It Takes a Village, and a Country Mart, to Help Children in Need

ImageWhen Marin Country Mart’s CEO and Founder Jim Rosenfield and Sunny Hills’ CEO Mary Denton met, they realized that they share a lot—both believe in building strong communities, the importance of giving back, and both work to ensure better and brighter futures for children, especially those with the odds stacked against them.

Jim is a retailing giant. He owns some of the state’s most successful and unique shopping centers. Designed by his company to provide more than just a shopping experience, they are environments where people can gather, children can play and businesses flourish.

After transforming the Brentwood Country Mart in Southern California, Jim bought what was then the Larkspur Landing Shopping Center in 2009. He thoughtfully remade it into the Marin Country Mart, which boasts 18 independent boutiques, more than 13 eateries, and services like a post office, yoga studio, and even a veterinary clinic, apropos for the animal-loving Bay Area. When designing the Marin Country Mart, Jim set out to recreate the feeling he had as a kid, when he visited the original Brentwood Country Mart (which he went on to buy in 2003 and still owns), and felt like part of something bigger than he had at home—a community. There is indeed a sense of community at the Marin Country Mart—it hosts a year-round farmer’s market, gourmet food trucks on Sundays, and more than 500 events, most of them for children and families.

After learning about Sunny Hills, which was founded in 1895 as an orphanage and today serves thousands of Bay Area young people who face seemingly insurmountable challenges, Jim wanted to help. “When I visited the Sunny Hills campus in San Anselmo and saw what a caring, therapeutic environment it is, I knew I wanted to support them somehow. Coincidentally, Sunny Hills was looking for the right venue for their “Ladies Night” flagship fundraiser in September, so I suggested The Marin Country Mart. I’m thrilled that we’ll get to participate in an unforgettable event that will make a real difference to children in need.”

Ladies Night at the Mart, benefitting Sunny Hills Services, is Friday September 19 from at 5:30 – 9:30 pm at the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur.
